The original Romeo And Juliet actors’ endeavours seem Quixotic.
Any number of factors can and do impact whether a victim will seek judicial recourse the emotional and psychological trauma inherent in such cases is complex to say the least. This change itself is a good thing: just because the victim does not take legal action against their alleged assailant within days, weeks or months does not mean the supposed offence did not take place.
One, is that the legal action both actors are taking is, on the surface, seemingly the product of that recent change to Californian law. There’s a couple of things to note about this story. The stars of Zeffirelli’s 1968 Romeo And Juliet adaptation, Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, are seeking more than $500 million in damages for what they claim are lost acting opportunities and mental anguish experienced in the subsequent 55 years since the film’s release.ĭespite stemming from events that transpired in the late 1960s, the lawsuit has been made possible by a new Californian law temporarily suspending the statute of limitation on crimes involving child sex abuse – a law which has resulted in a sharp uptake in suits filed from child abuse victims of the Catholic Church and Boy Scouts of America, among other institutions. It’s come to light that the two actors in the 1968 Franco Zeffirelli film Romeo And Juliet have taken legal action against Paramount Studios, claiming that they were the victims of an exploitative process that featured their naked juvenile forms in what they (or their lawyers) are claiming is tantamount to child pornography. The two leads of a 1968 adaptation of Romeo And Juliet are suing Paramount over a scene featuring the actors naked and, crucially, underage.
